Cross-border communication

Lesson 1:

The following educational material is designed to introduce some aspects of cross-cultural communication. The lesson introduces and gives practical tips on how to work as an efficient and productive member in a cross-cultural team, providing a teamwork concept and meeting structure, and a self-assessment test for team roles. This knowledge will enhance your abilities in efficiently communicating with people having different cultural backgrounds. This collection includes different kinds of material as below:

– Informative video clips with a focus on cross-cultural communication skills

– A video clip with a recorded voice of a PowerPoint presentation (subtitles available)

– An interactive slide show (should be used in full-screen mode)

– A document that presents material for teachers aiming for two 75-90-minute classes. This contains different educational tools such as texts and lectures, PowerPoint presentations, video clips, role-play practices, cultural games, exercises and assignments to engage students in group activities through which they can learn about and practice cross-cultural communication skills.

This collection is compiled by experts of the Physical Geography Department at Stockholm University and references are also given when a material is collected from other sources such as the University of California, Davis.

Lesson 2:

The focus of the educational material is cross-cultural teamwork skills. The lesson introduces and gives practical tips on how to work as an efficient and productive member in a cross-cultural team, providing a teamwork concept and meeting structure, and a self-assessment test for team roles. This knowledge will enhance the ability to work as an efficient and productive member in a cross-cultural team, providing a teamwork concept and meeting structure, and a self-assessment test for team roles. The materials provided include the following:

– An interactive slide show (should be used in full-screen mode)

– Informative video clips focusing on team roles and a teamwork concept called Mastermind group

– A document presenting material for teachers for a 60 minute class and an online student team meeting of 30 minutes (total of 90 minutes). The document contains different educational tools such as texts and lectures, a PowerPoint presentation, video clips and a team roles test for self-assessment exercise.

– The materials are divided into four (4) parts, which then can be covered according to schedule. At least Part I and practical instructions on slide 27 (page 17 on the teacher’s document) should be covered before the students’ online team meeting. For a more flexible schedule, the Team roles test (Part IV) can also be done individually as a home assignment.

This collection is compiled by ChangeMakers project experts from University of Turku, Department of education, Rauma campus. References are given when materials are collected from other sources.
